Yeaterday we were blowing bubbles outside with Mrs Allison and we came inside to write about them.

We had to write three amazing sentences to describe the bubbles like some bubbles are rainbows and we had to use our imagination to think about where they would float to.

Imagination rocks!

Last friday we had a book character dress up day and Mrs Pene took photos of us against the green screen in our characters outfits.
Then we discovered how to use the alpha key in keynote and pages to take out the green background and paste ourselves into a new imaginary place chosen by us using google image search.
Once we had created our amazing images we wrote one page of the story to match our picture, trying to remember to use all the things we have learnt this year about how to make our writing capture an audience.

Heritage Park and Museum Trip.

This week we were lucky enough to go on a trip to Heritage Park and the Museum to look at all the wonderful Treasures and Taonga on display.
We saw living treasures, kiwi, morepork and gheckos and lots of other treasures that were not alive.
We were all amazed at how many treasures there were right in our town and Pippa told us that only 10% of the treasures are on display at once! That means that there are another 9 treasures hidden away for every treasure that we saw!!! AMAZING!!
We had a go at being curators and we created our own display of treasured toys.

Thanks to all the wonderful parents who came and helped with transport and supervision and who took photos. We couldn't have gone without your help. : )

About Iron Brion
Iron Brion is a singing, dancing character developed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand, who for the past ten years has taken the healthy eating message out to primary school children in a fun, interactive way. Each year he performs to more than 50,000 children nationwide, conveying messages about the four different food groups, the importance of iron in the diet, breakfast and exercise. At the end of the hour-long show, the students are each given a delicious Heart Tick approved BBQ beef and salad burger.
The concept was originally developed because young New Zealand children have surprisingly high rates of iron deficiency. Although not a serious condition in its mildest form, iron deficiency can have a detrimental impact on concentration and energy levels, which can hamper children at a critical age. As with most things, prevention is better than cure. A healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle helps children get all the nutrients they need.
The Iron Brion BBQ Roadshow is such a high energy, entertaining show that children can’t help but get fully involved. He brings an important healthy eating message to the kids, but along the way they have lots of fun with dancing competitions and giveaways.

We had a great time today when Iron Brion visited our school - he reminded us about the importance of a balanced diet and taught us all about iron and why we need to include red meat in our diets.
We had a great time singing and dancing and answering quizzes and at the end we all got a delicious burger to eat! Yay for Iron Brion!

Autumn leaf Tagxedos.

We went out and jumped in all the Autumn leaves outside our classroom, then we came inside and brainstormed all the verbs and adjectives we could think of to describe them.
We typed the words into tagxedo and played around with the shape, layout, size, font and colour of them until we were happy with the result, then we took a screen shot to post on our blog.

We have been learning to use the transitions in keynotes. Mrs Pene taught us to alpha out the background, import a background from google image search and add text and then jazz it all up with the cool build in and build out features. These ones are from Ben Ca and Madeline and Ellen.

In diving deeper maths we solve problems and we also work out whether statements are true or false. We work together to work it out. It is led by Mrs. Gunson. We have it in the ict suite on Thursdays. We are Ben, Ben, Ben and Callum.

Mrs Pene's class has been using a programme called Morphx to change her students into wild aninmals! (Thankfully it was only clever computer programme or she would have had to send her class to the zoo!). Today, for a change, the Year Three children in Mrs Pene's class taught the big Year 5 and 6 children from Room 19 how to morph themselves into something else. It was awesome to see lots of people working together and it just shows you that we all can help others learn.

This week our shared book is Spy Manual. We have been learning about procedural writing and writing instructions for how to get Mickey Maloney from the spy house to the safe house.
We think that being a spy must be a lot of fun so we thought we would give it a go ourselves!
Today we took photos of ourselves against a green screen so we can publish our imaginative writing in keynote using the cool transitions we learned last week.

Teacher or children's work?

Someone has raised the question of whether the work on the blog is the children's or mine. I can assure you the work is all the children's! Most of the commentary is mine and I do the posting for security reasons but the work is all theirs!
It is amazing how quickly the children pick up and master new programmes and applications, they have no fear and are very creative!
Some of the children in the class spent 3 hours on Friday creating these keynotes, working independently, testing the builds and making changes and improvements until they were happy with the result. They amaze me with their skill, I had only introduced keynote in a quick 10 minute demo in the morning, then set those children who wanted to, a Friday IT challenge of illustrating a poem.
They had to pose for and take the photos on the playground of themselves looking scared, import the photo into keynote, choose a dragon using google image search, alpha out the background around the dragon, place the dragon on the background and decide on how it would build in, move around and build out! Lots of patience and practice required!!

What a great bunch of 21st century learners - I can't wait to see what you do with the next challenge I set you... spy movies!!

Using keynote to illustrate poems.

Today we were learning how to use keynote to move images and create mini movies to illustrate poems.
We had a practice using images we chose then Mrs Pene set us a challenge of illustrating the poem "There's a dragon on the playground" by Kenn Nesbitt.

Next week we are off to teach the seniors how to keynote! Not bad for a class of Year 3s. : )

In Peppers ghost when they light turned on you could see the ghost through the glass. - Ellen.

The voice thing changed your voice when you touched the string it made your voice go fuzzy. - Ben Ca

When the man put the ring into liquid nitrogen it got smaller and the ball wouldn't fit through the hole. Ellen.

When we heated the water in the plastic tube it went up the pipe. Lea and Sean.
When they heated up the plastic beads and then pressed them into a mould they made a new shape from recycled plastic. Aengus.

You could change the sound by moving your hands up and down over the plates.

We are reading the book "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown about the adventures of a boy who is accidentally flattened! We are going to make our own flat Stanleys and email them around the world to learn about other cultures!

Last Wednesday and this Monday we had hockey!!! Trevor was our coach, we learnt how to dribble and pass the ball to each other.We had a race to the end of the hockey field, I got a silver stick. By William.

In room 10 we have lots of different cultures like Hungarian, Filipino and Kiribati.

Some of us read a journal story about a powhiri, we found lots of new words

to talk about and find meanings for them.

In our learning journal we put stuff that we are learning in it and this term we have

culture.

This term we had a culture day. First we had a powhiri to go to.

Then we went to room 19. But then the teacher put us into groups. First I went to

room 10. We had to do weaving. I made a book. I used it to do maths with my sister. Then we went to room 8 and did some art work my brother really liked it. Then we went to room 1 and made tititorea. Then we went to room 19 and used our tititorea

and watched some people on the computer.

High five for clean hands!

Today we had a visit from the Public Health nurse. She did an experiment with us using glitter as germs to show us how easy it is to pass germs on. She put some glitter on Kanoa's hands, then he had to shake 3 peoples hands, then those people had to shake 5 people's hands until the whole class had shaken hands with one person. When we looked at our hands we all had glitter (germs) on our hands! YUK!! We didn't know it was so easy to pass on germs. Then we had to wash our hands for 20 seconds (sing happy birthday twice) and dry them for another 20 seconds (sing happy birthday twice again!)(or twinkle twinkle little star once) : )

Whew! We are going to be very careful to wash those germs away after going to the toilet, playing, or before eating.

This term is going to see a change in our class blog as the students become editors. Each week 2 students will be the bloggers of the week and will take a turn to decide what goes on our blog and to take the photos and write the report to go with it.

I am looking forward to seeing which of our fabulous learning adventures the children choose to share with you.

We made posters to show all the cultures we belong to. We used google images to get pictures and comic life to make our headings.

Constable Marnie comes to visit.

Today Constable Marnie came to our class to show us what she does. Her job is to keep us safe. She showed us what kind of weapons she uses and she let us try on her jacket. It was really heavy.
She told us to always take care of our property and keep it safe by naming it. She gave us a sticker and she told us how she uses her pepper spray. She handed around her handcuffs and she has plastic handcuffs in case they don't fit the metal ones.
She showed us her baton and she told us how it works. She has never had to use it on a person only once to smash a door open.
